Itinerary

13 Day Ultimate Wildlife Safari

  • Welcome to Kenya!

We will begin the trip with a VERY special private experience at Sheldrick Wildlife Trust; an incredible conservation organization that rescues and rehabilitates orphaned/injured wildlife… The most successful elephant rehabilitation program in the world!

We’ll spend the afternoon with the head keepers, learning about the elephants and each of their individual stories. We’ll enjoy time in the field with them and finish up by watching them run into their stockades for the evening to drink their bottles. A very special and exclusive experience!

We’ll follow up our special start with a welcome dinner in Nairobi, getting to know one another and talking about our exciting plans for the next 13 days.

    — We will be departing for Sheldrick in the early afternoon (around 2.30 pm), so you will need to arrive in Kenya that morning at the latest (or a day or 2 beforehand to get accustomed to your surroundings)!

  • Now our adventure officially begins! We will catch a 10 AM flight to Samburu Buffalo Springs; a breathtaking, semi-arid and less visited region in Northern Kenya. Samburu is home to 5 rare species (Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and Beisa Oryx) which, alongside spotting many of the iconic African animals that you’re bound to know and love, will be our main focus during our time here.

This beautiful and unique landscape is our home for the next 4 nights ⏤ a magical start to our Kenyan adventure.

Surana Buffalo Springs. Twin-share safari lodges set on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River in Buffalo Springs National Reserve.
Each equipped with its own private pool!

    Included Meals: B, L, D

  • On day 6 we’ll embark on a 6-hour drive to Lake Nakuru. This smaller National Park in the Great Rift Valley ⏤ 1700m above sea level ⏤ is a hotspot for birdlife with over 400 species recorded (endemic and migratory). During our time here, our main focus will be on finding rhinos, and the iconic flamingo in the neighbouring lakes.

One of our days here will also be dedicated to post-processing, where I dive into an edit and show you my steps for transforming my wildlife portraits. A beautiful spot in a more wetland environment to rest in the middle of our trip!

    Accommodation:

3 Nights at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge. Twin-share chalet-style rooms nestled along Lion Hill overlooking Lake Nakuru.

    Included Meals: B, L, D

  • And then we head to the Maasai Mara, the most iconic National Reserve in all of Kenya (and my personal fave).

A 6-hour drive from Lake Nakuru and we’ll instantly emerge in the unmatched beauty of the Mara. For our final 5 days (4 nights) we will be exploring this magical area in search of any and all species that we can find (big cats galore).

During our time here, we’ll also visit a local Maasai Village for a cultural experience, and for those that would like to embark on a truly unique safari, you’ll also have the chance to take to the skies in a hot air balloon (at an additional cost).

There’s a chance that we’ll also have access to some of the neighbouring conservancies for a quieter, less crowded experience.

  • It’s our final morning together :(

After our last game drive of the trip, we will then catch an 11 AM flight from Ol Kiombo Airstrip (not far from our camp inside the National Park) for a 1-hour plane journey back to Nairobi.

From there, our driver will drop you to the International Airport (JKIA) for your flight home, or to a hotel of your choosing if you decide to extend your stay in Kenya.

Me, hiiiiiii! I’ll be with you every step of the way, sharing my knowledge on how I photograph these incredible species in one of my all-time favourite places.

Hillary (aka. Sadala)

By the time we travel together in October of 2026, I will have known Hillary for over 3 years!! Hillary is a dear friend of mine, a local Maasai, and one of the kindest and most knowledgeable humans I've ever known. Together with one of his colleagues they will be there to facilitate some of the most special wildlife encounters for us. Couldn’t run this trip without him!

FAQs

  • Whilst our main focus will be on photographing the species we see, that certainly doesn’t mean that you need to be a photographer to join! The only necessity is that you have a love of wildlife…

If you are a photographer however, this is most certainly open to any and all skill levels. From total beginner to seasoned professional, this trip is for you!

  • My personal suggestion is to have a mirrorless/DSLR camera body, with a lens of at least 300mm in focal length (a 100-400mm or 200-600mm for example would be perfect). Keep in mind that there may be some incredible moments where you want to photograph the animals in their environment, so having a variety of focal lengths will be very helpful.

However, the aim of this workshop is for you to learn how to make the most of the equipment you already have, so bring what you can!

In terms of other accessories, we will be photographing from an open vehicle, so a beanbag is highly recommended. You can bring it empty and we will fill it up with beans/rice/corn somewhere at the beginning of our journey. Please reach out if you have any questions on this!

You will also need to bring your laptop and an external hard drive (preferably 2 so that you have a backup) for editing and image organization.

  • I chose October (over other times of the year) for a few reasons…

    1. It’s cheaper not being in peak season.

    2. Less crowds.

    3. The grass is shorter and much better suited for photography (particularly in the Mara) because the wildebeest have eaten it down during the migration.

    4. I have visited in July, September and October in the past… And October was my favourite by far!

    5. Even though the migration will be over, there’s still a chance that we will see Zebra’s crossing back over the river.

    6. Magical sunsets.

    7. Lots of baby animals.

    8. The tail end of the dry season before the rains begin!

  • Every day will be slightly different depending on the goals of the day and what the group is hoping to see.

In general, we will be starting quite early to maximise our time with the wildlife in the early morning light/when they are the most active. The beauty of having our own private guides (rather than those from the lodges) is that we can decide whether we’d like to go back to the lodge to relax/edit during the heat of the day (and go back out in the afternoon), or stay out all day to continue our search.

We will discuss our plans for the next day over dinner the evening prior!

  • We will be in 2 photography specific safari vehicles ⏤ each with 4 guests per car in order to allow ample space to move around and get the perfect shot. I (Kate) will sit in the front with our wonderful guides and rotate between vehicles throughout the day in order to share my knowledge & advice with you!

  • Yes absolutely!!! Throughout the workshop we will spend our free time (often in the middle of the day) going through our images and working on them together ⏤ from image organisation to post-processing and diving into any questions you may have.

There is also one rest day in the middle of the trip at Lake Nakuru that will be dedicated to a big editing session.

  • Our accommodation throughout the trip is double occupancy luxurious tents/lodge rooms. 2 guests per room grouped via gender (or with your partner if travelling as a couple). Each equipped with all of the essentials to ensure a very comfortable stay in the heart of nature.

We begin with 1 night in Nairobi at Ole Sereni 2.5.4, have 4 nights in Samburu at Surana Buffalo Springs, 3 nights in Lake Nakuru at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, and finish with 4 nights in the Maasai Mara at Serenity Mara Legends Camp.

⏤ Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

  • Yes! All meals starting with dinner on Day 1 and finishing with breakfast on Day 13 are included and can be catered to any dietary requirements.

Throughout the trip we will have a mix of buffet-style catering/privately catered/à la carte meals at the lodges. All drinks/alcoholic beverages, and any additional snacks/food outside of main meals (explained on Day 1) are to be paid for at your own expense.

  • This time of year you can expect occasional rain showers, but it’s mostly dry. Daytime temperatures in October are around 27℃ (81℉), with nighttime temps reaching around 11℃ (52℉).

It will be warm 24/7 when up north in Samburu, but it can definitely get chilly overnight in Nakuru and the Maasai Mara during the middle/tail end of our trip. In general, you want to have clothes that can be easily layered/removed!

After signing up I will give you further information about the locations, itinerary, packing lists etc.
